Illumination offers us a heart warming union of the ancient & rich tradition of Classical Indian music, woven together with a calm and meditative musical intention. "Music to breathe by."
On Illumination, Ty brings together bamboo flute maestros, Steve Gorn and Manose. They take the listener on a journey into the rising sun within us all. Together with the inspirational rhythms of Ty on tabla, they illuminate an intention to find strength and kindness within all our lives.
"This album was conceived many years ago when I was first beginning my training on the tabla with Zakir Hussain. As a matter of fact, I used to listen to Steve Gorn's albums prior to discovering my own love of Indian Classical music. Steve has always been so supportive of not only my playing, but of my leaning forward towards expanding my love of music into a career. From that time forward we have toured throughout the US developing a very kind hearted relationship both as musicians and as friends. In the past number of years we have both had the pleasure of meeting and playing with Nepal's premier bansuri player, Manose (Deva Premal). He is a wonderful and uplifting person, which of course appears within his music. Thus, when the opportunity came for us all to record together, we jumped at the chance.
My vision for this recording was to present both Steve & Manose in a light classical setting which would display their individual tone and expression while showing the listener how seamlessly they weave their ideas and feelings into one illuminated landscape. The album was recorded live in Steve's home studio in Upstate NY, and later I added some rich drones and background vocals to fill out a depth to the backdrop.
